Welcome to The Patriots' Page

The Pledge of Allegiance

I

Me, an individual, a committee of one.

Pledge

Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance

my love and my devotion.

To the Flag

[of the]
Our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there's respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.

United

That means that we have all come together.

States

[of America]
Individual communities that have united into 50 great states. 50 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country.

and to the Republic

For Which It Stands
Republic ... a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

One Nation,
Under God,

One Nation ... meaning, so blessed by God.

Indivisible,

Incapable of being divided.

With Liberty

Which is freedom, the right of power to live one's own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.

And Justice

The principle or qualities of dealing fairly with others.

For All

For all ... which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.

Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said,
 "That is a prayer,"
and that would be eliminated from schools, too?"

"Operation ShoeBox" has started cutting the Stars out of Retired American Flags that were
weathered too bad for flying, and placing  them in  small clear plastic holders with a note that says;

"Packed with Love and Support by Volunteers of Operation Shoebox"
And then they are sent out to our American Heroes in Iraq.
The soldiers have been carrying them in their wallets or their top pocket  close to their hearts.
A very nice way to let them know that were still thinking about them back home.

"ATTENTION  MEMBERS"

Service Officer Alert - "Veterans Affairs Services"

The VA General Counsel has notified us that an organization called "Veterans
Affairs Services" appears to be holding itself out as a recognized service
organization; it is not a recognized service organization.  This
organization may be assisting veterans and others to file claims and, in the
process, obtain personal information.  The GC has asked us to ask you to
report any contact you may have had with "Veterans Affairs Service".

If you have any examples of "Veterans Affairs Service" helping veterans or
other claimants file claims with VA please call Fred Burns, Assistant
Director, at (202) 608-8367.  Please be prepared to provide at least the
name and telephone number of the veteran when you call Mr. Burns.

VAS may be gaining access to military personnel through their close
resemblance to the VA name and seal.  Our Legal Counsel has requested that
we coordinate with DoD to inform military installations, particularly
mobilization sites, of this group and their lack of affiliation or
endorsement by VA to provide any services.

In addition, GC requests that if you have any   examples of VAS acts that
violate chapter 59 of Title 38 United States Code, such as VAS employees
assisting veterans in the preparation and presentation of claims for
benefits, please pass any additional information to...

Governor Granholm Signs Legislation to Expand Veterans Memorial Park,
Erect Purple Heart Monument

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has signed legislation honoring Michigan veterans and commemorating their contribution through a Lansing-area memorial.  The two bills will increase the size of the Veterans Memorial Park and create a monument in the park honoring Michigan recipients of the Purple Heart Medal.

“The members of Michigan’s armed forces have provided perhaps the greatest service to our state and our country,” Granholm said.  “It is important that we honor the sacrifices of Michigan’s Purple Heart recipients.”

Veterans Memorial Park was created under the Michigan Vietnam Veterans Memorial Act.  House Bill 5620 increases the size of the park by nearly an acre.  Veterans Memorial Park is located in Lansing near the Supreme Court Hall of Justice, two blocks west of the State Capitol building.

Senate Bill 764 creates the Purple Heart Recognition Act.  The act requires the erection of a Purple Heart monument within the expanded Veterans Memorial Park.  The Purple Heart honors members of the armed forces who are wounded or killed in battle.  Approximately 60,000 recipients of the Purple Heart currently live in Michigan.

This statue currently stands outside the Iraqi palace,
now home to the 4th Infantry division.
It will eventually be shipped home
and put in the memorial museum in

Fort Hood
,
Texas

The statue was created by an Iraqi artist named Kalat, who
for years was forced by Saddam Hussein to make the many
hundreds of bronze busts of Saddam that dotted

Baghdad

.
Kalat  was so grateful for the Americans liberation of his
country; he melted 3 of the heads of the  fallen Saddam
and made the  statue as a memorial to the American soldiers
and their fallen warriors.   Kalat worked on this memorial
night and day for several months.

A MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR

Veterans Day

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1918. Its purpose: to commemorate the end of World War I. First proclaimed by Congress in 1926, and each year thereafter, Armistice Day became “Veterans Day” in 1954 as a result of legislation signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The name was changed to honor all who served the nation in wars or conflicts. Veterans Day has been observed annually on this date since 1978, except for a brief period when it was celebrated on the fourth Monday of October.

    "NEWLY FALLEN HEROES

When a member of the armed services from Michigan is killed in action, the Governor will issue a press release with information about the individual(s) and the day that has been designated for flags to be lowered in his or her honor.  The information will also be posted on Governor Granholm’s web site at www.michigan.gov/gov in the section titled

Faith is not believing that God can.
It is knowing that God will.

By Ben Stein

We truly take a lot for granted.
Forget about the Hollywood "stars" and the sports "heroes"...
"Think about the Real Heroes"

"No, freedom isn't free."

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.

A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.

I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag! had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea

Of unmarked graves in Arlington.

No, freedom isn't free.

 "THE FINAL INSPECTION"

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
 "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
 Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
 And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
 That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
 And sometimes, God, forgive me,
 I've wept unmanly tears.

 I know I don't deserve a place,
 Among the people here.
 They never wanted me around,
 Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
 It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
 As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

 "Step forward now, you soldier,
 You've borne your burdens well.
 Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

This Mask We Wear

Look under the mask we soldiers wear,
look under the mask if you dare.
Look under the mask and see behind,
Or are you scared of what you'll find.

We are not beasts nor men of war,
we do not wait to hear deaths door.
We do not relish the death we see,
we only fight by your decree.

You condemn us all as if you knew,
you say your words without a clue.
You dare not look into our eyes,
dying daily under scorching skies.

We serve and watch our brother's fall,
but hear the names you give us all.
Please take a moment look and see,
our fears, our terror, our misery.

We are not heroes from comic books,
we're not all handsome blessed with looks.
We are not fearless men of war,
but merely reapers by deaths door.

You sent us here or so it seems,
and expect our hands to stay so clean.
But in this place we see such sights,
which make your sons change overnight.

You hear of a child just last night killed,
and the fathers heart with hatred filled.
You say god bless please don't feel shame,
if I were he I'd feel the same.

But in our case you blame us quick,
no thought of what has made us sick.
It was not daughter, son or kin,
but one of our brothers our brethren.

We really are a band of brothers,
our mates beside us from one mother.
She guides us through both day and night,
and if we're lucky past the fire fight.

And when a son of hers doth die,
in writhing agony screaming why.
His brothers gathered by his side,
we hold his hand and watch him die.

You have to know just how this felt,
my brother a boy (God how I wept).
He squeezed my hand and kissed it too,
and begged for me to pull him through.

I lied of course and told him sure",
I lied because there was no cure.
I lied to let him die in peace,
I lied to make his pleading cease.

We watched him crying, spewing blood,
we watched him twitching soaked in mud.
We held him tight to let him know,
his brothers were with him time to go.

To go through this but not just then,
but time and time more boys again.
You tend to lose the human code,
and mutate into killing mode.

Are we still human I hear you ask,
it changes daily from task to task.
But picture now what we go through,
now ask yourself the truth, could you?

I am not here to change the bad,
what some do in war is more than sad.
But try to imagine the awful facts,
you can't get close, thank God for that.

Your little boy who went to war,
your little baby to foreign shores.
Please understand we still are here,
but look past our sin and see our tears.

We've seen such horrors done to mates,
we've lain and wept till sleep us takes.
Our nightly dreams of things gone past,
bodies of others torn by blasts.

So when you condemn our brothers now,
Remember please this poem and how -
We've paid for war with blood and sin,
please don't make us pay again.

But if you want to hound us down,
bring us to justice before the crown.
Bear this in mind before you do,
what would you have done if we were you?

I'd not have done it I hear you shout,
they signed the line let's throw them out!
God help you sleep at peace tonight,
and pray you never have to fight.

To close this poem I admit the shame,
the guilt of sin this weight of pain.
I'll live with this my whole life through,
give thanks to God it was not you.

Like soldiers gone in wars before -

adieu.

Paul Harvey says:

I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue
somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I
don't agree with Darwin , but I didn't go out and hire a
lawyer when my high school teacher taught his theory
of evolution.

Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be
endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer
before a football game.

So what's the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there
reading the entire book of Acts. They're just talking to a
God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the
players on the field and the fans going home from the game.

"But it's a Christian prayer," some will argue.

Yes, and this is the United States of America , a country
own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others
better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect-somebody
chanting Hare Krishna?

If I went to a football game in Jerusalem
I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer.

If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad
I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.

If I went to a ping pong match in China
I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.
And I wouldn't be offended.
It wouldn't bother me one bit.
When in Rome

"But what about the atheists?" is another argument.
What about them?
Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We're not going to
pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds. If
that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear
plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand.
Call your lawyer!

Unfortunately, one or two will make that call. One or
two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do.
I don't think a short prayer at a football game is
going to shake the world's foundations.
Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other
cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our
parents and grandparents taught us to pray before
eating; to pray before we go to sleep.

Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. Now a
handful of people and their lawyers are telling us
to cease praying.

God, help us.

And if that last sentence offends you,
well ...

The silent majority has been silent too long. It's time we
let that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard
.... that the vast majority don't care what they want. It
is time the majority rules! It's time we tell them, you don't
have to pray; you don't have to say the pledge of allegiance;
you don't have to believe in God or attend services that
honor Him. That is your right, and we will honor your
right. But by golly, you are no longer going to take our
rights away. We are fighting back ...
WILL WIN!

God bless us one and all ... especially those who denounce
Him. God bless America, despite all her faults. She is still
the greatest nation of all.

God bless our service men who are fighting to protect
our right to pray and worship God.

"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they
protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they
perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our
Lord and Savior. Amen."

FLAGMAN IS STILL GOING STRONG

Fifty-eight thousand, two hundred and twenty-eight.
By: Cheryl Dennison , Associate Editor 12/29/2007

This is the number of the names engraved on the Vietnam War Memorial Wall. It is also the number of miles a Vietnam veteran is running in honor of each and every name that appears on that wall. The names on the wall signify each person who lost their life during the Vietnam War.

Mike "Flagman" Bowen, of Flushing, has been running for the last 20 years. He was seen recently running, carrying his MIA/POW flag, with Jim Sjostrom of Fenton Township.

On Dec. 8, Bowen and Mark Dyer, of Bancroft, showed up at Sjostrom's house with their flags and all three men ran 12 miles, proudly carrying the flags. Many of those driving by the runners beeped their horns and waved the runners on.

Bowen, 59, made a vow in 1984 to run one mile for each name on the Vietnam Memorial wall, and to date, has run a little over 50,000 miles.

"My mileage is over 50,000 now and my 59-year-old body can't take the long runs every day like it used to," said Bowen. He still runs three to four times a week and said he gets at least 30 to 40 miles in. Bowen said he goes to see the memorial wall at least once a year, to look up the seven names "he can put a face to."

"For many years, I felt guilty that my name wasn't there," Bowen said.

Sjostrom refers to Bowen's mission as a "love story to our American flag and the POW-MIA flag." An avid runner himself, Sjostrom said many of those who pass the runners by wave and cheer them on. One day a lady waved, and when he waved back, she rolled her window down and asked if he was the one she sees occasionally running with the flags. He told her that they were two of his dear friends. She told Sjostrom she really enjoyed seeing the flags.

"I want to thank all of the drivers who blow their horns enthusiastically waving at us and our country's beautiful flag," said Sjostrom. "You bring tears of joy to our eyes."

Despite going through some surgery for cancer in the last couple years and his doctor telling him he doesn't want him running, Sjostrom said Bowen told him he has to "run to live."

"Mike and his wife have dedicated their lives to helping veterans and their families," Sjostrom said.

Pictured Rock s Run in Munising
By J

Since 1982, the downstate Flushing man has been trying to run one mile for every one of the 58,220 names etched into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington , D.C.

On Sunday, Mike Bowen will run some of those miles in the Pictured Rock s Run for Shelter in Munising. The fund-raising event benefits Harbor House, a domestic violence shelter serving Marquette and Alger counties.

"It is one of my favorite races and I try to get there every year," Bowen said. "It's a good cause and a good event and I like hills. The more challenging the better."

The event is in its 30th year. Originally created by Norma and El Harger, the runners' classic has been organized by the Spouse Abuse Shelter Project Board for the past seven years.

Race participants walk or run the 5-mile and 11-mile courses, which are set through parts of Munising and its surrounding woodlands.

The traditional race is an 11-mile course that traverses the ridges and woods encompassing the city, passing waterfalls and streams with Lake Superior nearby.

The course is basically a figure-8 shape. Nine of the 11 miles are on paved county roads and M-28. Within the last three miles of the course, the trail leads up a sandy incline through the forest onto a gravel road.

This part of the course is known locally as "Stink Hill" and includes a 300-foot incline over a quarter-mile distance and a pronounced decline before ending the race with a quarter-mile loop around the track at R.M. Nebel Memorial Field.

Participants in the 5-mile event experience a much less challenging course over flat, paved surfaces throughout Munising.

The top three finishers, in both women's and men's categories, are awarded decorative rock trophies.

So far, Mike Bowen has run a little more than 50,000 miles on his quest. Making his task more difficult is his running with a large black POW/MIA banner, which has given him the nickname "The Flagman."

"I carry a POW/MIA flag because so many from my generation didn't return from Vietnam ," Bowen said. "Several of my friends I knew in high school didn't make it home and some buddies I knew in the service didn't make it back. I was lucky."

Bowen was drafted in 1968 and served his military duty in Germany . He started his quest the same year the Vietnam Memorial was dedicated. Bowen has run the Pictured Rock s Road Race for at least 15 years.
